Humans of Horizant featuring:
Dan Liu—Chief Operating Officer

“In finance, numbers tell a story—but listening to people reveals the full picture.”

Meet Dan Liu, Chief Operating Officer at Horizant. In her role, Dan manages the finance department and leads the operations team, driving strategic initiatives while ensuring both internal and external stakeholders are well-supported in an ever-changing industry.

Dan, what do you enjoy most about your role at Horizant—and how does it make a difference?

Working for a smaller company like Horizant, I value how every decision I make can have a direct, immediate effect. With constant changes in government, the economy, and technology, each day brings new challenges that drive me to stay agile and act quickly. I recognize that my actions play a key role in moving the business forward, and that responsibility keeps my work exciting and engaging.

I also appreciate how “people-focused” we are at Horizant. Our primary goal is to help others work more efficiently and solve problems—creating opportunities not just for ourselves, but for our clients as well. This value-driven approach feels far more meaningful and rewarding than simply chasing profits.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in your field?

My background is in accounting. Throughout my career, I’ve seen many accountants get stuck in the numbers-driven mindset, simply reporting figures. But the real value comes from stepping back, opening your eyes to other perspectives, and listening to what others have to say. There’s immense value in listening—whether it’s for identifying opportunities for yourself or creating solutions that benefit the client.

I also believe real long-term success is about finding a purpose, knowing what drives you, avoiding shortcuts for the sake of short-term gain, and learning from your mistakes. Ultimately, if your job helps you grow as a person, then you’re on the right path.

If you could describe your job in three words, what would they be and why?

#1—Impactful

Because Horizant’s financial health touches such a broad range of stakeholders, the ripple effect of my actions can be far-reaching. I’m constantly aware that the decisions I make today have consequences that extend well beyond the present, shaping the company’s future as well as the lives of all those involved.

#2—Strategic

Thoughtful decision-making is crucial in my role, as I must constantly balance between managing risks and pursuing new opportunities.

I evaluate cost-saving strategies while investing in growth, always focusing on long-term sustainability over short-term wins. Every decision I make is guided by what will create lasting value and move the business in the right direction

#3—Conscientious

Ensuring the financial stability of a company is a huge responsibility I take very seriously and approach with great care.

From managing cash flow and forecasting to budgeting and beyond, I am always mindful of how my role affects employees, customers, and Horizant’s overall success. Meanwhile, accuracy, transparency, and integrity are at the core of my work, and attention to detail is essential to keeping everything on track.
